WHERE IS THE PEACE?

2024 began with wars burning in Israel, Sudan, and Ukraine and peacemaking in crisis. Worldwide, diplomatic efforts to end fighting are failing. Often peacemaking is non-existent or going nowhere.

At the same time, it seems that conflict in families, schools, government, churches, and people in sports stadiums is increasing. Where is the peace? We may not be able to solve world conflict, but we can be those who experience and promote peace.

Peace is not just the absence of conflict or strife; it is the presence of righteousness that brings enemies together.

Peace begins with God.  He is the source of peace.  He is called the God of peace 6 times in the New Testament; Jesus is the Prince of Peace; and the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of peace. (Galatians 5:22)

If you and I are going to be peacemakers, we must know God and draw upon His gracious supply of peace.

However, because we live in a fallen world, conflicts, which stress and strain relationships, will occur.  The enemy of peace is pride and selfishness. When disappointments, offenses, or unmet expectations pile up, our relationships with other people can be damaged or even destroyed.

It is during these situations, that we have both the privilege and responsibility to be peacemakers.  Jesus said it openly: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.” (Matthew 5:9)

Peacemaking is what God calls us to do when we (or other people) need to resolve differences and restore healthy relationships with God and one each other.

“Make every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit.” (Ephesians 4:3) Try to live in peace with everyone. (Hebrews 12:14) Where you see the beginning of division or conflict, ask the Lord for His wisdom and grace to deal Biblically with those in conflict.

Is there someone who has something against you?  According to Matthew 5:23-24, would you go to that person and humbly make it right?  Are you willing to forgive others who have offended you? With God’s love, forgiveness and peace are always possible. Let’s take the message of peace to a warring world.

“Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.” (2 Corinthians 13:11)
