Where is your treasure?

Did you know that approximately one-sixth of the gospels and one-third of the parables touch on the subject of stewardship? Jesus dealt with money matters because money matters. That is why Jesus warned in Luke 16:13: No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (money).

Jesus cautioned us about accumulating possessions on earth when he said in Matthew 6:19-21: Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Randy Alcorn in his book, THE TREASURE PRINCIPLE, succinctly summarizes this revolutionary concept: “You can’t take it with you—but you can send it on ahead.”

Dr. Haddon Robinson said: “Either we serve God and use money, or we serve money and use God.

Use the following questions to aid in diagnosing the place money occupies in your life.

Do I faithfully give as a matter of obedience to God’s Word? Do I give as God prompts me, by faith? What specific material sacrifices could I make right now that might help others to be made spiritually rich? Am I willing to change how I spend my money if God prompts me to do so? What does my giving reveal about the depth of my love for the Lord Jesus?

With God’s help, let’s use the gifts He gives us on earth to do things that matter—things that will last forever.
