EXPERIENCING THE VOICE OF GOD
Is it possible to hear God’s voice today as certainly and clearly as Adam, Abraham, Moses, and Samuel did and as undoubtedly as Paul and the Apostles experienced?
I believe it is possible. God does not change, and he is still speaking. We serve a God who desires his voice to be known. God is not silent. Our heavenly Father longs to guide us, share his heart with us, and do life with us. He’s longing for a relationship with us filled with ongoing conversation.
Jesus said in John 10:27, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” He also said, “Whoever is of God hears the words of God” (John 8:47).
In John 16:13 Jesus says, “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.”
The Spirit of God himself dwells within us (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) and longs to speak to our hearts. He longs for us to know the will of our heavenly Father the way Jesus did. He desires for us to follow his leading, moment by moment, the way those in the Old and New Testament did. He can speak with words or give an intuition or knowledge about something. He can fill us with love for a person, peace about a decision, joy during a difficult circumstance, or give us a feeling of unrest when we’re about to sin or make an unwise decision.
God speaks to us today primarily through his revealed Word. The Bible is the living, active communication of a living, dynamic God who yearns for relationship with us (Hebrews 4:12).
God also speaks in many ways as he did in the pages of Scripture—in dreams, visions, through other people, through worship, through angels, and through circumstances. The message that you hear from the above ways that God speaks, will always be consistent with the Word of God, always! If it is not, reject it immediately!
God has always sought for a people who honor and fear His voice. But God will never force his voice on us. He is a God of peace and grace and patience. Revelation 3:20 says, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.” God is continually knocking on the doors of our hearts and is ready and willing to come in and meet with us in every part of our lives. Will you open the door of your heart to the Lord today?
